Cannabis Trends – An Interview with Cornerstone Wellness Founder, Erica Kay

How long have you been involved with Cornerstone Wellness?

I founded and have worked at Cornerstone Wellness for over 14 years. We started out as a medical shop for the first nine years and have been both medical and recreational for the past five years. 

Is THC still the biggest factor for flower shoppers?

Yes, but Cornerstone Wellness is a little different though as we have always worked with Northern Californian artisanal outdoor farms who might not see the highest THC percentages, but produce some of the best and most medicinally active flowers on our shelves. We have been an education-focused wellness shop for over a decade and have seen that the more our customers understand how cannabis and our endocannabinoid system works, the better choices they make in choosing cannabis products that bring the desired effects. 

What would you say is the most in-demand cannabis flower right now at Cornerstone Wellness?

Durban Poison has been one of the consistent best-seller for the past decade. It’s coveted for its focused, creative stimulation and pain-reduction qualities.

How have the shopping habits of customers at Cornerstone Wellness changed over the past year?

We have definitely seen an increase in edible and beverage consumption. These are more discreet products that are easier to enjoy at home. 

Is there a way to tell if a new brand will sell? When does this become clear?

While there are products with big budgets and marketing campaigns behind them that are bound to sell well, we are supporters of small indie companies who might not have the same marketing or promotional budgets. We work hard to ensure that we cover them in our staff education and sampling, weekly newsletters, and social media. If it’s a good product, it will catch on with our customers sooner rather than later.

Are there any particular trends that you’re seeing right now? 

The most loyal cannabis consumers are discerning and know what they want in a product. You can’t fool them with specialized sales strategies or marketing magic. If it’s not a superior product, it’s not going to make it.

What is your favorite experience with a customer?

My favorite experiences will always be customers’ thank-yous and stories about how cannabis medicine has changed their life for the better. Particularly it’s the relief and happiness in our patients’ voices and faces when they update you about how they are now testing cancer-free, or that they are finally sleeping through the night, or can laugh and find joy again.
