The History of Cannabis and Women

There exists a deep connection throughout history between women and cannabis. In fact, the history of women and cannabis can be traced all the way back to even before the Common Era. This link has persisted for centuries and remains strong until this present time. 

Before Common Era

  • 500 BCE: The mummified remains of the Altai Princess was officially found in 1993. The woman, who lived during the 500 BC era, is said to have died because of metastatic breast cancer. Her body was later discovered alongside cannabis and it is believed that she would use it to alleviate her pain. 
  • 50 BCE: Ancient Greek historian Diodorus Siculus states that Egyptian women use cannabis to improve their mood and raise their spirits.

1st Millenium 

  • 70s BC: Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides, the famed author of a 5-volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine and substances, notes that cannabis is used by individuals of the Roman Empire to suppress feelings of sexual desire.
  • 2nd Century: To ease the pain that comes from childbirth, the Egyptians use a cannabis-infused pessary.

19th Century 

  • 1840s: It is believed that Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom uses cannabis to relieve menstrual cramps. It is said that she would also use it to help treat morning sickness.
  • 1854: Marijuana is officially medically recognized as a childbirth aid. This occurs when it is included in the well-respected book “The Dispensatory of the United States of America.” 
  • 1860s-70s:  Famed author Louisa May Alcott, who wrote “Little Women”, has several of her works feature cannabis use within them.

20th Century 

  • 1930s: Russian brides use cannabis as an aphrodisiac and as a way to alleviate the anxiety of wedding night sex.
  • 1969: Cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead speaks to the US Senate advocating for the legalization of cannabis because of her own experiences and her research of other societies. She is criticized by the press for her stance. 
  • 1974: In her memoir “Gather Together In My Name”, Maya Angelou writes glowingly about her experiences with cannabis. 

21st Century 

  • 2006: One of the oldest individuals living at the time, Fulla Nayak, dies at the age believed to be 125. During her life, she credits her use of ganja cigarettes for her long life. 
  • 2016: In the cannabis industry, women hold 36% of executive-level leadership roles. They also fill 63% of high-level positions at testing labs.
