What Is 420?
In 1971, a group of five friends at San Rafael High School in California called themselves the “Waldos.”
They used “420” as private slang. The group would meet at 4:20 p.m. after school near a campus statue. Their goal was to search for a rumored, half-abandoned cannabis grow near Point Reyes.
They shortened their phrase “420 Louis” to just “420.” It became their code for cannabis.
Because some of the Waldos had connections to the Grateful Dead’s crew, the term spread through the Deadhead scene. Over time, 420 became associated not only with 4:20 p.m., but also April 20.
Today, April 20th, is an informal holiday celebrating cannabis culture nationwide.
